Quick answer
Almost always, no: a referral can’t be attached after the order. The terms count only an order placed through the link, and once you’ve activated you’re no longer a new customer. What you lost is one month of service credit, one free month of service on the eligible plan picked at sign-up. Your kit, price and plan are the same as anyone else’s.
This page shows no referral link on purpose: after you’ve ordered, a link can’t help you.
Why it can’t be added later
“The Referred Subscriber places an order for a Starlink Kit using the Unique Referral Link provided by the Referrer. No other referral mechanism shall qualify as an Eligible Referral.”
“The Referred Subscriber is not, and has never been, a Starlink subscriber.”
The help center adds that existing and returning customers are not eligible, and SpaceX alone decides whether a referral counts, and its decision is final.
Your situation, and what to do
| Situation | Still possible? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ordered on starlink.com without the link; not shipped or activated | Unclear | Cancelling and reordering through a link before activation might work, but nothing confirms a cancelled order still leaves you a “never subscribed” customer. If you try, do it once, before the kit ships, and keep the cancellation email. |
| Ordered without the link; service active | No | Ask support once (message below). Don’t cancel to chase it. |
| Opened the link on one device, ordered on another | Maybe not | Check your order. |
| Ordered by phone or chat; the agent promised the credit | Not reliably | Get the promise noted on your account in writing, then check your second bill. |
| Bought the kit at a store, from a reseller, or used | No | kits bought from resellers, retailers or through an account transfer don't qualify. |
| Had Starlink before, at any address | No | Nothing to fix; returning customers are excluded. |
What the missed month is worth
One month of your plan: $55/mo on Residential 100 Mbps, up to $130/mo on Residential Max. Weigh that against the hassle of cancelling, time without service, and the chance that a fresh order costs more (a demand surcharge, for example).
If you want to ask support anyway
Ask once, in the support section of the Starlink app. Short and polite works best:
“I meant to order with a referral link from [first name] but placed my order on [date] without it. Is there any way to apply the referral? If not, no problem, thank you.”
Don’t send it through several channels or argue. Support isn’t obliged to say yes, and the terms say only a written waiver from a SpaceX representative empowered to grant one changes them.
If you’re still inside the return window
For a starlink.com order, hardware cancelled within the 30-day return period is refunded in full. Returning and reordering through a link resets nothing about your past-subscriber status once you’ve activated, so this only matters if you haven’t activated yet. For store kits, store and reseller kits are returned to the store, not to Starlink.
Helping someone else order?
Send them the four ordering steps before they start. Opening the link first, on the same device, is the step that would have saved your free month.
Questions people ask
Can Starlink support add a referral after I ordered?
There’s no process for it in the help center, and the terms say only an order placed through the link counts. You can ask once, politely; expect a no.
A phone or chat agent said the referral would still apply. Will it?
Don’t count on it. The terms require ordering through the referral link, and only a written waiver from a SpaceX representative empowered to grant one changes the terms. Ask the agent to note the promise on your account, then check your second bill.
Should I cancel and reorder with a link?
Rarely worth it. Once you’ve activated, you’re a past subscriber and can’t qualify. Before activation, a cancelled order may or may not count against you; we can’t confirm either way. One month of service is the most you can win.
I bought my kit at a store. Can I add a link now?
No. Store, reseller and second-hand kits never qualify, before or after activation.
