Quick answer
The terms put tax entirely on you: rewards come with no tax included or withheld, and the referrer alone decides whether tax is owed and files anything required. The IRS position is that the IRS says all income is taxable unless the law specifically excludes it. Whether SpaceX or its processor sends a Form 1099 isn’t stated anywhere (whether SpaceX or its payment processor issues a Form 1099 for referral cashunverified).
Not tax advice
This page lists what sources say and what they don’t. Your tax position depends on your situation; a CPA or enrolled agent can tell you how to report rewards.
What the referral terms say
“Rewards are calculated and issued in local currency, exclusive of taxes. SpaceX is not responsible for any taxes, duties, or other governmental charges arising from or in connection with any Reward. The Referrer is solely responsible for any tax liability associated with receipt of a Reward (including the determination of whether such tax liability exists), for issuing any invoice or tax document required under local law, and for making any necessary filings with the relevant tax authorities.”
“Rewards are promotional incentives and are not wages, salary, commissions, or compensation for services.”
What the IRS publishes
| Form | Who would file it | Threshold |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-MISC | A business paying prizes, awards or other income | $2,000 or more in the year |
| 1099-K | A payment processor (third-party settlement organization) | Form 1099-K from a payment processor only above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year |
A form not arriving doesn’t make money tax-free. The IRS says the IRS says all income is taxable unless the law specifically excludes it, and income gets reported whether or not a form shows up.
What isn’t known yet
- Whether SpaceX or its payment processor issues any 1099 for referral cash.
- Not stated: how service credits on your own bill are treated for taxunverified.
- How a reward that’s revoked after it was paid is treated. The terms allow it: a reward can be limited, delayed or revoked, even after it's issued, for fraud, abuse or a terms violation.
A worked example
Example (hypothetical)
An owner refers three neighbors who asked about service in 2026 and takes cash. At the US example of $100 each, that’s three times the reward, well under the $2,000 1099-MISC threshold, so a payer wouldn’t be required to send that form. That doesn’t answer whether the owner reports the money; it only explains why no form may arrive.
Records worth keeping
- Each reward: the date it paid, the amount, and whether it came as credit or cash. Your account track referrals and rewards under Referrals on the web or in the Starlink app.
- Bank deposits from the payment processor, matched to those rewards.
- Any tax form you do receive, and the email that came with it.
- Any reward reversed or revoked, with the date.
Questions people ask
Do I owe tax on Starlink referral cash?
The terms leave that to you: rewards come with no tax included or withheld, and the referrer alone determines whether tax is owed. The IRS says all income is taxable unless the law specifically excludes it. For your own situation, ask a tax professional.
Will Starlink send me a 1099?
Neither the terms nor the help center say. For payments made in 2026, a payer must file Form 1099-MISC for prizes, awards or other income of $2,000 or more in the year, and Form 1099-K from a payment processor only above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Not receiving a form doesn’t settle whether the money is income.
Are service credits taxed the same as cash?
No source we can cite says. Credits reduce your own Starlink bill rather than paying you money; how that is treated is a question for a tax professional.
Is the reward a commission?
The terms call rewards promotional incentives, not wages, salary, commissions or compensation for services. That describes how SpaceX characterizes them; it doesn’t decide your tax treatment.
