Quick answer
A referral only counts when the new customer activates with a service address in the same country as the referrer's. A US customer’s link won’t earn anything for an address in Canada, Mexico or anywhere else, and the free month isn’t promised either. Your friend should get a link from a customer in their own country.
“The Referred Subscriber activates a Starlink subscription with a service address in the same country as the Referrer’s service address.”
The confusing line in the help center
The referral help article says the help center says rewards 'may vary' for referrals outside your country, but the terms require the same country. That sounds like cross-border referrals work at some other rate. The terms, which say they are the entire agreement for the program, require the same country. Until Starlink reconciles the two, plan on the stricter rule.

What your friend can do instead
- Ask a customer who lives in their country for a link: the program runs in most places where Starlink is sold, so a friend abroad can usually get a link from someone in their own country.
- Order on starlink.com for their own address, after opening that link on the same device.
- If they know nobody there, order normally. The referral is worth one month of service, not a reason to wait.
If you’re the US owner
Don’t send your link abroad hoping it works. Referring someone who doesn’t qualify is against the terms you accepted, which say you certify each referral meets every rule.
Questions people ask
Can I refer a friend in Canada with my US link?
Not for a reward. The terms require the new customer’s service address to be in the same country as yours. Your friend should use a link from a customer in Canada.
The help center says rewards “may vary” abroad. Doesn’t that mean it works?
The help center does say rewards may vary for referrals outside your country, but the terms, which are the contract, require the same country. When the two disagree, rely on the terms.
What if my friend moves to the US later?
What counts is the service address they activate with. If they order for a US address, through a US customer’s link, on starlink.com, and have never had Starlink, the usual rules apply.
