Quick answer
A current US customer shares their personal link. If you’ve never had Starlink and you order on starlink.com through that link, you get one free month of service on the eligible plan picked at sign-up, credited on the second monthly bill. After two full billing cycles, the person who shared it gets a reward: $100.

How it works, step by step
Read the steps as text
- Referrer: an existing customer shares the link from Referrals in their account.
- New customer: opens the link and orders on starlink.com with a US address; has never had Starlink; pays month one.
- New customer: the second monthly bill has one month of service free.
- Both: two full billing cycles pass on a high-speed plan (not Standby).
- Referrer: the reward is issued, as service credit unless they chose cash, as soon as 60 days after the new customer activated.
Before you order: the qualifying rules
These come from section 3.1 of the Referral Program Terms, republished Oct 3, 2026. All of them must be true.
- The new customer has never been a Starlink subscriber (existing and returning customers are not eligible).
- The new customer orders the kit using the referrer's own link; no other referral method counts.
- The new customer activates with a service address in the same country as the referrer's. For a US link, that means a US service address.
- The new customer buys the kit and plan directly on starlink.com, not at a store, reseller or by private transfer.
- The new customer stays on a high-speed plan (not Standby) for two full monthly billing cycles.
- The new customer actually uses the service and intends to keep it; SpaceX compares retention against the national average.
- The new customer is a natural person (an individual, not a business), and is not experiencing financial hardship, domestic or family violence, or another vulnerability.
Eligible plans: Residential Lite, Residential, Residential 100 Mbps, Residential 200 Mbps, Residential Max, Roam 100GB, Roam 300GB and Roam Unlimited.
“Final determination of whether a referred customer constitutes an Eligible Referral rests exclusively with SpaceX in its sole discretion and such determination is final and binding.”
How to order so the link counts
Get a link from a current customer
Anyone you know on an active Residential or Roam plan has one under Referrals in their app. Every US customer’s link gives you the same free month.
Open it on the device you’ll order with
Phone link, phone order. If you’d rather order on a computer, send the link to yourself and open it there. Why this matters.
Build the order on starlink.com in that same tab
Pick your plan, enter your address and pay month one. Don’t close the tab and come back by typing starlink.com.
Activate the kit and keep the service
Starlink’s help center describes the same three steps: open the link you were sent, sign up for Residential or Roam on starlink.com, activate the kit, and stay subscribed at least 2 months.
What happens after you order
| When | The new customer | The person who shared the link |
|---|---|---|
| Order placed | Normal order confirmation. | An email that someone ordered through their link. |
| Month 1 | the new customer pays for the first month as normal. | Referral shows as pending. |
| Month 2 | The second bill carries the credit; Starlink emails the new customer when the free month is confirmed; the account's bill preview shows month 2 as free. | Still pending. |
| After 2 full cycles | Nothing more to do. | Reward: rewards are issued as soon as 60 days after the friend activates, as credit unless they chose cash. |
What the free month is worth
The credit equals one month of the plan you choose, so its dollar value depends on the plan. National list prices from starlink.com’s own plan data:
| Plan | One free month is worth |
|---|---|
| Residential 100 Mbps | $55/mo |
| Residential 200 Mbps | $85/mo |
| Residential Max | $130/mo |
| Roam 100GB | $55/mo |
| Roam 300GB | $80/mo |
| Roam Unlimited | $175/mo |
Common reasons a referral doesn’t count
| What happened | Why it doesn’t count | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Ordered without opening the link | Only the link counts; it can’t be added later. | Already ordered |
| Link opened on a phone, order placed on a laptop | The laptop order may never have carried the link. | Check before paying |
| Kit bought at a store, reseller or second-hand | kits bought from resellers, retailers or through an account transfer don't qualify. | Your options |
| Had Starlink before, at any address | Returning customers are excluded. | Nothing; order normally. |
| Service address outside the US | Both addresses must be in the same country. | Friend abroad |
| Cancelled or moved to Standby early | The referral needs two full cycles on a high-speed plan. | Decide within the return window instead. |
Does the referral change your decision?
It shouldn’t. One month of service is real money but small next to a year of service, the kit and any surcharge. Choose the plan and whether Starlink suits you first; the link only decides whether month two is free.
When a referral link is the wrong thing to chase
- You’ve had Starlink before: you can’t qualify, so order normally.
- You’re set on a store kit for a store deal: compare the deal against one free month; the link can’t be combined with it.
- Money is tight: compare lower-cost internet options and assistance programs first, before committing to any satellite plan.
Claims still circulating online
Many pages still describe the 2023 program, when both people received a service credit: the app's share button read "Free month for you and them" and credits landed 30 days after the new customer activated. Each claim below is checked against the current text.
Outdated claim: Both people get a free month.

Current text: That was the 2023 program. Today the new customer gets the free month and the sender gets a reward of a fixed amount. (one free month of service on the eligible plan picked at sign-up; $100)
Outdated claim: The credit shows up 30 days after activation.

Current text: Also the 2023 rule. The new customer’s credit is on bill two; the sender’s reward comes as soon as 60 days after activation. (credited on the second monthly bill; rewards are issued as soon as 60 days after the friend activates)
Outdated claim: Referral rewards are never paid in cash.

Current text: Credit is the default, but US referrers can switch to cash in the Referrals tab. (rewards arrive as service credit unless you choose cash; switch to cash to a linked bank account under the Referrals tab; it applies to future referrals)
Outdated claim: Only Roam Unlimited and Residential count.

Current text: Every Residential tier and all three Roam plans are eligible now. (Residential Lite, Residential, Residential 100 Mbps, Residential 200 Mbps, Residential Max, Roam 100GB, Roam 300GB and Roam Unlimited)
Outdated claim: The terms ban “bulk social posts” and “mass emails.”
Seen: Secondary blogs, Oct 3, 2026
Current text: Those words aren’t in the terms. The real rule is broader: no unsolicited contact of any kind. (no unsolicited contact of any kind; keep consent records for five years)
Outdated claim: Using referrals to make money breaks the terms of service.
Seen: A review site’s Aug 25, 2026 article
Current text: The current referral terms contain no such sentence. They do describe participation as voluntary and occasional, and SpaceX checks for abuse. (the terms describe participation as voluntary and occasional; a reward can be limited, delayed or revoked, even after it's issued, for fraud, abuse or a terms violation)
Questions people ask
Do both people get a free month?
Not any more. That was the 2023 version of the program. Today the new customer gets one free month on their second bill, and the person who shared the link gets a referral reward of a fixed amount (Starlink’s US example is $100), as credit or cash.
Is there a discount on the kit with a referral?
No. The referral is one month of service credit on the second bill. It doesn’t reduce the kit price, a rental activation fee or a demand surcharge.
Does a referral work with the Starlink Mini or Roam?
Yes for Roam plans ordered on starlink.com through the link: Roam 100GB, Roam 300GB and Roam Unlimited are all on the eligible list. A Mini bought at a store doesn’t qualify, because store kits never do.
What if I cancel in the first two months?
Starlink’s help center asks new customers to stay subscribed at least two months, and the referral only counts for the sender after two full billing cycles. If you’re not sure you’ll keep the service, use the 30-day return window to decide, not the free month.
Can I use a referral link for a second line or a second home?
Not if you’re already a customer. The terms require the new customer to have never been a Starlink subscriber.
Who decides if a referral counts?
SpaceX, in its sole discretion, and its decision is final under the terms. That is why it pays to follow the ordering steps exactly.
