A pending Starlink referral is an order placed through your link that hasn’t earned a reward yet. It stays pending until your friend has been subscribed for two full monthly billing cycles on a high-speed plan, which normally takes about two months from the day they activate. Only then does it “mature” into an eligible referral and get paid, and even that isn’t guaranteed: a pending referral is not guaranteed to pay; SpaceX can hold a reward while it checks eligibility.
Pending is the longest and most fragile part of a referral. This guide explains where the status comes from, how long it lasts, what can end it from either side, and what the terms protect.
Where “pending” comes from
“Pending Referral” and “Eligible Referral” are terms from the Referral Program Terms. The key sentence is the minimum-stay rule:
“The Referred Subscriber must maintain continuously subscribed and in good standing for two full monthly billing cycles in order for a Pending Referral to mature to an Eligible Referral.”
So in the terms’ own language, a referral starts as pending and “matures” into eligible. Only an eligible referral earns a reward. The glossary has both definitions side by side.
What Starlink doesn’t publish is the exact wording of the labels in your Referrals dashboard, or the moment the status first appears. Starlink’s help center says you can track referrals and rewards under Referrals on the web or in the Starlink app. When we say “pending” here, we mean the terms’ definition: ordered, not yet matured.
The four stages
Stage 1: someone orders through your link
Starlink’s help center says you get an email when someone orders through your link. That email tells you an order exists. It doesn’t tell you the order will ship, be activated, or stay.
Stage 2: pending
The clock that matters starts when your friend activates the kit, because that’s when their billing cycle begins. Starlink’s billing page says the cycle starts on the day the kit is first activated, or automatically 7 days after delivery if they don’t. From there, the referral is waiting for two full cycles to pass.
During this stage your friend pays month one, gets their free month on bill two, and keeps going. You wait.
Stage 3: matured
When two full cycles are complete, the referral becomes an “eligible referral”. That’s the point after which your own account changes can no longer cancel it: the terms say that if you cancel, are suspended or drop to Standby only, “Eligible Referrals will be paid on the terms at the time such Eligible Referral matured.”
Stage 4: issued
The reward is paid once: each successful referral pays once. Starlink’s US example is $100; the exact reward amount is the one shown in your Starlink account. It arrives as credit unless you switched: rewards arrive as service credit unless you choose cash. For cash, cash can be paid up to 30 days after the referral matures.
How long pending lasts
The help center gives two descriptions that point to the same date:
- “Rewards are issued after your referee subscribes for two months.”
- “The reward is issued as soon as 60 days after they activate.”
Worked example: your friend activates on October 10. Their cycles run October 10 to November 9 and November 10 to December 9. Sixty days after October 10 is December 9. So the earliest your reward can be issued is around December 9 to 10. If you chose cash, it can take up to 30 days more after the referral matures, so into early January. Two full billing cycles shows more dates, including a December activation where the 60-day mark falls a day before the second cycle ends.
Three things make pending feel longer than it is:
- Shipping and setup time. If your friend ordered on September 20 but activated on October 10, count from October 10.
- “As soon as”. Sixty days is a minimum, not a promise.
- Verification holds. The terms let SpaceX pause a reward while it checks eligibility (more below).
What ends a pending referral
On your friend’s side
If your friend cancels, returns the kit, or pauses with Standby before two full cycles, the minimum isn’t met. The new customer stays on a high-speed plan (not Standby) for two full monthly billing cycles. The referral simply never matures. Friend cancelled in month two goes through that case in detail, including what you can and can’t say to them about it.
On your side
This is the one owners miss. Your own plan matters as much as your friend’s:
“If Referrer cancels their Starlink subscription, has their Starlink subscription suspended, or otherwise fails to maintain at least one high-speed service plan Starlink subscription (excludes Standby Mode), all Pending Referrals will be cancelled and Eligible Referrals will be paid on the terms at the time such Eligible Referral matured.”
“All” means every pending referral at once. If you’re thinking of pausing for the winter, read pausing or cancelling your own plan first.
On SpaceX’s side
SpaceX can stop a pending referral in two ways. It can hold or refuse a reward while it investigates, and it can cancel referrals outright: a reward can be limited, delayed or revoked, even after it's issued, for fraud, abuse or a terms violation. It can also ask you questions, and you must answer any SpaceX information request within 24 hours (or the deadline it gives). Missing that deadline is grounds for termination. Finally, SpaceX alone decides whether a referral counts, and its decision is final.
What protects a pending referral
The terms also give pending referrals some protection, which is easy to miss:
- Rule changes. SpaceX can change or end the program, or the reward, with 30 days' notice, and referrals already pending when a change is announced keep the old terms during the notice period. A referral that was pending on the day a change was announced is judged by the old rules during the notice period.
- Program or participation ending for convenience. SpaceX can end any referrer's participation, or their cash option, for convenience with 30 days' notice. The parenthetical “except for Rewards associated with Pending Referrals” reads, to us, as protecting rewards already in progress. It’s our reading of an awkwardly placed clause, not a promise.
- Your reward type choice. Switching between credit and cash doesn’t reset anything. The reward type selected when a reward pays out is the one used.
Pending, eligible, issued: three words, three meanings
| Status | What it means | Can it still be cancelled? |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Ordered through your link; two full cycles not yet complete | Yes, by either side leaving, or by SpaceX |
| Eligible (matured) | Two full cycles done on a high-speed plan | Only for fraud, abuse or a terms violation |
| Issued | Credit applied to your bill, or cash sent | Yes, in the same cases: SpaceX can revoke “including after issuance” |
The last row surprises people. Under the terms, a reward can be clawed back even after it’s paid if SpaceX finds fraud, abuse or a breach of the rules. For honest referrals that’s unlikely to matter, but it’s one reason to keep simple records of who asked you for your link and when; records to keep for each referral has a template.
What you can usefully do while you wait
Very little, and that’s by design. A pending referral depends on your friend’s choices and on SpaceX’s checks, not on anything you send or say. The few things in your control:
- Keep your own plan on high-speed service. Don’t pause, downgrade to Standby, or let a payment fail until every pending referral has matured.
- Decide credit or cash now. The reward type is the one selected when it pays out. If you want cash, switch under Referrals and complete the payment processor’s checks before the reward is due; if those checks aren’t finished, if you don't finish the processor's identity checks, every reward is paid as credit. See why every reward can become credit.
- Watch your email. If SpaceX asks for information, answer within the deadline.
- Note the activation date if your friend mentions it. It’s the only way to know when “as soon as 60 days” falls. Don’t ask them for account details; the terms bar referrers from collecting a prospect’s personal data.
Common mistakes
- Counting from the order date. The two cycles start at activation.
- Treating the “someone ordered” email as money owed. It’s stage one of four.
- Pausing your own service while referrals are pending. It cancels all of them.
- Pushing your friend to stay. The minimum is their choice; pressure can turn into a sharing-rule problem. The sharing rules cover what’s fine to say.
- Ignoring an email from SpaceX. Information requests have a 24-hour deadline.
What we don’t know
As of our Oct 5, 2026 check, Starlink doesn’t state:
- The exact moment a referral first shows as pending (at order, shipping or activation).
- What the dashboard labels are called, or whether a cancelled referral is shown at all.
- How long a verification hold can last.
- Whether you’re told when a pending referral is cancelled because your friend left.
If you can share a dated screenshot of your Referrals page with personal details removed, the contact page explains how; it helps us describe the dashboard accurately.
What to do next
- Pending for longer than expected? Work through referral stuck pending: what to check.
- Want the reward as cash? Switch before the referral pays out; see credit or cash.
- Thinking of pausing? Wait until every pending referral has matured.
- New to referring? The owner’s guide to the reward has the readiness checklist.
