A Starlink referral that’s still pending usually isn’t stuck yet. The reward is issued as soon as 60 days after your friend activates their kit (not after they order), and cash can take up to 30 more days after that. So count from activation first. If it’s clearly past that window, check six things in order: your own plan, their stay, how they ordered, unanswered emails, your invoices, and then contact support with dates.
Step 1: count the days properly
Two timing rules apply, one from each source:
- The help center: rewards are issued as soon as 60 days after the friend activates.
- The terms, for cash: cash can be paid up to 30 days after the referral matures.
And day zero is activation. Starlink’s billing help page says the billing cycle begins on the day the kit is first activated, or automatically 7 days after delivery if the customer doesn’t activate. A friend who ordered on September 1, received the kit on September 12 and set it up on September 14 has a day zero of September 14.
A worked example with that September 14 activation:
| Milestone | Date | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Activation (day 0) | Sep 14 | Billing cycle starts |
| Two full cycles end | Nov 13 | Minimum stay met |
| 60-day mark | Nov 13 | “As soon as 60 days” |
| Earliest maturity | Nov 14 | Referral becomes eligible |
| Cash, at the latest | about Dec 14 | Up to 30 days after maturing |
If today is November 1, nothing is late. If it’s mid-December and you chose credit, it’s worth looking. For cash, give it until mid-December before you worry. Two full billing cycles shows how to work out the dates for any activation day.
“As soon as” is a floor
The help center says “as soon as”, and the terms add a reason it can be later: a pending referral is not guaranteed to pay; SpaceX can hold a reward while it checks eligibility. No time limit is given for that review. A referral can be correct in every way and still sit pending for a while during a check.
Step 2: run the six checks
Check 1: the clock
Already covered above. It’s the most common answer.
Check 2: your own plan
This one surprises owners. If the referrer cancels, is suspended, or drops to Standby only, all pending referrals are cancelled. If you paused with Standby, even briefly, or a payment failure got your account suspended, pending referrals are cancelled, not delayed. Pausing or cancelling your own plan covers the details.
Check 3: their stay
The new customer stays on a high-speed plan (not Standby) for two full monthly billing cycles. If your friend cancelled, returned the kit, or paused during the first two cycles, the referral never matures. You may not be told. If they mention leaving, that’s your answer; see friend cancelled in month two.
Check 4: how they ordered
A referral only exists if the order was eligible from the start. The new customer orders the kit using the referrer's own link; no other referral method counts. The same customer buys the kit and plan directly on starlink.com, not at a store, reseller or by private transfer, and has never been a Starlink subscriber. They also need one of the eight eligible plans and a US service address. Common breaks: they opened your link on a phone and ordered on a laptop, they’d had Starlink before, or they bought the kit at a store. The help center does say you get an email when someone orders through your link, so if you never got that email at all, the order may never have been tied to your link.
Check 5: your inbox
Look for anything from SpaceX or the payment processor that you haven’t answered. You must answer any SpaceX information request within 24 hours (or the deadline it gives). A missed request can stall a referral or worse.
Check 6: your bill
Credit is the default: rewards arrive as service credit unless you choose cash. If you were watching your bank for cash but cash wasn’t selected at payout, or the processor’s ID step wasn’t finished, the reward may already have come off an invoice. Download your recent invoices from Billing and look for a credit line. Why every reward can become credit explains the cash conditions.
Three “stuck” referrals, diagnosed
“It’s been 70 days since my friend ordered.” The friend ordered on August 20, the kit arrived August 30, and they activated on September 5. Day zero is September 5, so the 60-day mark is November 4. On October 29 (70 days after the order) the referral is still normally pending. Answer: check 1, nothing wrong.
“I chose cash and nothing came.” The referral matured in mid-November and the owner was watching their bank. Their December invoice showed a credit line instead: the processor registration had never been finished, and the terms say if you don't finish the processor's identity checks, every reward is paid as credit. Answer: check 6. The reward was paid; the next one can be cash once registration is complete.
“It vanished after my trip.” The owner paused with Standby for three weeks in October while two referrals were pending. Both were cancelled under the terms’ “at least one high-speed plan” rule. Answer: check 2. Nothing Starlink publishes says resuming service brings them back.
None of these needed a support ticket. That’s typical: work through the checks before you write.
Step 3: contact support, with dates
If every check passes and you’re past the window, contact Starlink support from your account. Give them what they need to find the referral, and nothing that belongs to your friend.

Subject: Referral reward not issued (referrer)
Hello. I'm a Starlink customer on [plan]. A new customer ordered through my referral link around [order date]; I received the referral purchase email on [date]. As far as I know they activated around [activation date] and are still subscribed. Two full billing cycles from that date ended around [date]. My Referrals page shows [what it shows: pending / nothing / other] as of [today's date]. My reward type is set to [credit / cash] and [for cash: my payment processor registration is complete as of date]. My own service has stayed on a high-speed plan throughout. Could you check the status of this referral and tell me if anything is needed from me? Thank you.
Why each line is there:
- Your plan and continuous high-speed service rule out the most common cause on your side.
- The purchase email date lets support find the referral without your friend’s details.
- Activation and cycle dates show you understand the timing rule.
- Reward type and processor status rule out “it was paid as credit”.
What to leave out: your friend’s account number, address, email or phone. The terms say don't collect a prospect's personal data; share only the link and send them to starlink.com. Support can look it up from your side.
What to expect: the terms don’t describe an appeal, and SpaceX alone decides whether a referral counts, and its decision is final. If support says a referral wasn’t eligible, it may not explain why.
Keep a record either way
Note the date you contacted support, the reference number and the answer. If you’re tracking several referrals, or taking cash, a simple log saves time later; records to keep for each referral has a template. Rewards can also be revisited after the fact for fraud or abuse: a reward can be limited, delayed or revoked, even after it's issued, for fraud, abuse or a terms violation, which is one more reason to keep your notes.
Common mistakes
- Counting from the order date. Activation starts the clock.
- Treating 60 days as a deadline. It’s the earliest date, not the latest.
- Pausing your own plan while you wait. That cancels the referral you’re waiting for.
- Missing a credit on the bill. Credit is the default.
- Sending support your friend’s account details. Not needed, and against the spirit of the data rule.
What we don’t know
As of our Oct 5, 2026 check, Starlink doesn’t publish:
- How long a verification hold can last.
- What the Referrals dashboard shows for a cancelled referral, or whether you’re notified.
- A typical time from maturity to a credit appearing.
- An appeal process.
What to do next
- Understand the stages first: what a pending referral means.
- Something else went wrong? The problems page lists other referral issues, including rewards paid as credit.
- Want the full payout timeline? See credit or cash, and the owner’s guide for what cancels a reward.
